Crowdfunding Corner: Same City
Today I am starting a brand new feature that I plan to visit often. Here in Crowdfunding Corner I will be discussing the up and coming artists that are currently looking for support from their fans through a Crowdfunding campaign. I’m a huge fan of kickstarter and the whole crowdfunding movement. It gives a great opportunity to the artists to get some much needed financial help and get more opportunities. As for the consumer, it lets you support the projects you want to see. Not only do you get the satisfaction of seeing the project get funded, but you also get some nice gifts as a result of the pledge reward system. It’s a win-win for all involved.
My first romp through the kickstarter music section brought me to the campaign for Same City. They are an alternative Christian band from Houghton, New York. They have been together for over a year now and have already been performing in small venues around the US. I have to admit that I wish that they had put a bit more into the main page of their kickstarter campaign. However, if you are careful to go over all the content completely, it becomes clear why these kids should get your support.
I am specifically referring to the song Give Us Life. This is a fantastic track that displays some excellent musical creativity and an ear for good music from this group. As the track starts I am immediately pulled in with an upbeat intro accented through backup vocals that really help to give the song an immediate personal feel. The whole acoustic guitar alternative rock song has been done to death by artists all over the place. It takes work to give it a fresh sound. Sometimes something as simple as an accent here and there can do the trick.
The rest of the track is a mix of fast tempo chorus and slightly subdued verses that help you get a clear sense of the mood the song is going for. The ending again exemplifies the creativity of the musicians involved with some interesting synthesizer usage, again added to give the track a unique flavor. Is it perfect? Unfortunately not. Some of the changes in tempo struck me as bit awkward and it feels like the track would have been better served if it kept a consistent pace. Also, the quality of the track really shows the need for the mastering that the band created the campaign for.
So why should you support Same City? Beyond the areas of improvement, this is clearly a very talented band. They clearly understand the value that little adjustments to proven and true music formulas can do to give it a fresh feel. Secondly, the vocals are fantastic. Both the vocalists do a wonderful job in fitting in exactly with the music, never sounding overpowering or lost in the mix of the different sounds. This is a group that has a lot of potential and are definitely deserving of the kick start. A positive message from some excellent up and coming musicians; what crowdfunding is all about.
As of the writing of this article, there are 18 days left in the kick start campaign. I wish that there were more reward levels below the $18 mark for marketing reasons, but it certainly does not tarnish the sound.
